Uganda Cranes return to action today, Thursday, March 20, in a high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mozambique at Cairo International Stadium.

With both sides eyeing a ticket to the global showpiece, Paul Put’s men face a must-win scenario to keep their campaign alive.

Currently sitting fifth in Group G with six points, Uganda trails joint leaders Mozambique and Algeria by three points.

A victory in Cairo would bring the Cranes level with Mozambique and set up a decisive home clash against Guinea on March 25.

The Cranes are still recovering from last June’s 2-1 loss to Algeria, a match where they had taken an early lead at Mandela National Stadium before succumbing to the North Africans.

That result derailed their campaign, but today presents an opportunity for redemption.

Uncharted Territory

Surprisingly, this will be the first-ever official meeting between Uganda and Mozambique.

The Mambas have been in fine form, winning three of their four qualifiers, including impressive victories over Guinea and Botswana. Their only loss came against Algeria.

Uganda, on the other hand, has had an inconsistent run; beating Somalia and Botswana by identical 1-0 scorelines but falling to Algeria and Guinea.

With just two goals scored in four matches, the Cranes must find a way to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to revive their World Cup dream.

Selection Headaches for Put

Coach Paul Put has had to make crucial decisions ahead of the tie, especially in defense. Italian-born centre-back Elio Capradossi was initially left out of the squad but has since joined camp.

However, he remains a doubt due to his previous injury issues, while fellow defender Halid Lwaliwa was ruled out completely.

Wigan Athletic’s Tobby Sibbick could make his competitive debut, providing an alternative in central defense alongside Timothy Awany and Bevis Mugabi.

At right back, Elvis Bwomono appears the likeliest starter, given that Kenneth Ssemakula has been deployed as a midfielder at Club Africain in Tunisia.

The midfield will be anchored by captain Khalid Aucho, who remains a pillar of experience and leadership.

Speaking ahead of the match, the captain assured fans that the team is fully focused and ready for the battle.

“The boys are fine, everyone is motivated and in good condition. They are getting what the coaches are telling them, and we are ready to fight for our nation,” Aucho said.

With the match being played in Egypt due to Mozambique’s lack of a FIFA-approved stadium, Aucho called on Ugandans in Cairo to turn up in numbers.

“I know we have several fans here in Egypt. We call upon you to come and support us tomorrow. It would mean a lot to us to see you in the stands,” he added.

Aucho could be partnered by Ronald Ssekiganda or Kenneth Ssemakula, while Travis Mutyaba is expected to play in the attacking midfield role.

Upfront, Steven Mukwala’s recent form at Simba SC makes him a strong candidate to lead the line. He could be joined by Muhammad Shaban, who has returned from injury, or Jude Ssemugabi, giving Uganda more firepower in attack.

A Defining Moment

Uganda’s World Cup qualifying campaign is at a crossroads. A win today keeps them in the race; anything less complicates their path to North America 2026.

With history yet to be written between these two teams, the Cranes have a golden chance to make a statement.

Kickoff is set for 4 PM EAT at Cairo International Stadium.
