Onyango vs Dortmund: Ugandan Legend in the Spotlight at Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially launched their African Tour, with Uganda as the first stop in a celebration of football and legacy.

The club, home to legendary Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango for over a decade, is set to engage with Ugandan football fans and communities through a series of events aimed at giving back to the sport.

The tour, organized in collaboration with the Denis Onyango Foundation, began today, March 20, with a school visit to Ntanda College in Butambala.

Over the next few days, the team will engage in several activities, including a visit to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on March 21 and a special stop at SC Villa, the club where Onyango started his professional career.

The highlight of the tour will be football clinics at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on March 22, where young players will get a chance to learn from some of the best in the game.

Denis Onyango, a name synonymous with African football excellence, remains one of Uganda’s greatest sporting icons.

The 38-year-old shot-stopper has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Mamelodi Sundowns, winning multiple South African league titles and the prestigious CAF Champions League in 2016.

His performances between the posts earned him the CAF African-based Player of the Year award in 2016, a testament to his influence on the continent’s football scene.

Beyond club success, Onyango was also the long-serving captain of the Uganda Cranes, leading the team to their first Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 39 years when they qualified for the 2017 edition.

With Uganda as the first destination, Mamelodi Sundowns’ African Tour aims to connect with football-loving communities across the continent, celebrating the sport’s ability to inspire and unite. More details and updates from the tour will be shared on the club’s official platforms.
