Tuchel Urges England to Embrace Hunger Over Fear as World Cup Qualifiers Loom

Just a few weeks into his tenure as England manager, Thomas Tuchel has laid out his vision for the national team, emphasizing a shift from a cautious approach to one driven by a “hunger to win.”

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Tuchel addressed the perceived pressure on the team and his desire to see them play with excitement and a winning mentality as they embark on their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Tuchel, who officially took over from Gareth Southgate in January, didn’t shy away from addressing the criticisms leveled at his predecessor’s style of play, particularly during Euro 2024.

While acknowledging Southgate’s achievements in guiding England to consecutive European Championship finals, Tuchel suggested a more proactive approach is needed.

“I’ve heard a lot that it’s a heavy shirt. It is in fact not. But I know what the players mean,” Tuchel stated, referencing the pressure often associated with representing England. “Watching the Euros I felt tension and pressure on the shoulders of the players and they were playing not to lose.”

The German manager, who boasts an impressive club management record including Champions League and league titles with Chelsea, Paris St-Germain, and Bayern Munich, stressed the importance of embracing risk. “I want us to play with excitement and the hunger and desire to win…and the acceptance of failure is part of it, especially in football.”

Tuchel’s comments come ahead of England’s opening World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley on Friday, followed by a match against Latvia on Monday. These games will be the first test of his philosophy on the international stage.

While acknowledging the successes of the Southgate era, which saw England reach the final of Euro 2020 and 2024, as well as the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, Tuchel hinted at a desire for a more expansive and attacking style.

He specifically mentioned wanting “a higher number of touches in the opponent’s box, higher amount of attacks, higher amount of high ball recoveries.”

This shift in emphasis could be a welcome change for some England fans who felt Southgate’s approach at Euro 2024 was too conservative, despite navigating a challenging group stage and reaching the knockout rounds.

Tuchel’s appointment in October was a clear statement of intent from the Football Association, tasking him with delivering England’s first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup at the upcoming tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The new manager emphasized the importance of creating a positive and expressive environment within the squad. “We want to implement the togetherness and the joy and for everyone to feel safe to express themselves and give their very best,” he said.

Captain Harry Kane, who worked with Tuchel at Bayern Munich, echoed the manager’s sentiments, stating that the players have adapted quickly to the new regime.

“I had the pleasure of working with him last year and I knew what he could bring to the type of squad we have,” Kane said. “We’ve only been together a few days and it hasn’t disappointed. Camp after camp, as he settles in and we get to know him more, I think we will improve as we go. Ultimately, it’s about building up until next year.”

Kane highlighted Tuchel’s direct approach and clear expectations.

“He’s very straight talking,” he said. “He knows what he wants and knows what he wants from his team. It doesn’t matter who you are or how many games you played, he’ll tell you the same as he will tell one of the young players what he wants. That’s a good standard to set.”
