FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Uganda Jumps to Third in Group G After Hard-Fought Win Over Guinea

Uganda Cranes secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Guinea in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Mandela National Stadium, with Allan Okello’s first-half free-kick proving to be the difference.

The win lifts Uganda to third place in Group G with nine points, trailing Algeria and Mozambique as the race for qualification intensifies.

Guinea started brightly, but Uganda’s defensive structure led by captain Elio Capradossi held firm.

The game’s defining moment came in the 36th minute when Okello stepped up after Guinea’s Camara’s foul just outside the box.

The attacking midfielder curled in a stunning free-kick past the Guinea goalkeeper, sending the home fans into celebration.

Despite taking the lead, Uganda had to withstand significant pressure, especially in the closing moments.

Nafian Alionzi who started ahead of long term number 1 Ismail Watenga produced a crucial save in the 87th minute to keep Guinea from equalizing, while substitute Jude Ssemugabi nearly set up a second goal, but Calvin Kabuye couldn’t connect in time.

Guinea made attacking substitutions in the second half, introducing Diakité and Condé at halftime in an attempt to shift momentum.

However, Uganda’s defence, led by captain Elio Capradossi and reinforced by the introduction of Timothy Awanyi remained composed, ensuring they saw out the win.

With the three points secured, Uganda remains firmly in contention for World Cup qualification.

The Cranes will now shift their focus to the CHAN 2025 tournament which Uganda will co-host in August alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
