Red Bull Racing has made headlines with its decision to replace Liam Lawson after just two races in the 2025 Formula 1 season.
The New Zealander, who struggled in the opening rounds, will return to Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls, while Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda steps up to partner Max Verstappen for the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix.
Lawson’s debut season with Red Bull has been challenging, marked by poor qualifying results and a crash in Australia.
His average qualifying deficit to Verstappen has raised concerns, and insiders suggest Red Bull’s management, led by Christian Horner, felt the need for a swift change.
Tsunoda, who has shown promise with Racing Bulls, expressed enthusiasm for the promotion, stating, “In Japan? Yeah, 100%. I mean, the car is faster.”
This move has sparked debate within the Formula 1 community, with critics questioning Red Bull’s handling of its young driver program.
Verstappen reportedly believes the issue lies with the car’s performance rather than Lawson’s capabilities, highlighting ongoing balance problems that have hindered the team.
