Victoria Pearls Triumph in Capricorn Eagles Series Opener Against Namibia

The Victoria Pearls, Uganda’s national women’s cricket team, began their Capricorn Eagles Series campaign in a sensational manner, overcoming hosts Namibia in a nail-biting encounter at the High Performance Oval.

The opening match showcased both teams’ resilience, as Uganda eked out a narrow two-run victory in a game defined by dramatic moments and standout performances.

Having elected to bat first, Uganda faced early adversity with key players Janet Mbabazi and Immaculate Nakisuuyi falling cheaply. The Pearls’ innings teetered at 31/3 midway through, but a crucial partnership between Esther Iloku and Stephanie Nampiina turned the tide.

Iloku’s composed knock of 47 runs, supported by Nampiina’s solid 33, powered Uganda to a respectable total of 98/5 in their allotted overs. Namibia’s bowlers, led by the disciplined Wilka Mwatile (2/16), ensured the hosts remained in contention.

Namibia’s pursuit of 99 began confidently, but Uganda’s bowlers tightened their grip with decisive wickets at key intervals. Sarah Akiteng was the star with the ball, delivering a remarkable spell of 3/6 to anchor the Pearls’ defence.

Assisted by the economical efforts of Consy Aweko and Nakisuuyi, Uganda restricted Namibia’s run flow effectively. Despite spirited knocks from Manuel Bianca (20) and Mwatile (18), the hosts fell agonizingly short, leaving Uganda to celebrate their two-run triumph.

Esther Iloku was deservedly named Player of the Match, highlighting her pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s victory.

Reflecting on her performance, Iloku expressed pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “We worked together and fought hard despite the setbacks. It’s an honor to contribute to such an important win.”

Captain Janet Mbabazi lauded the team’s fighting spirit and praised the bowlers for their calmness under pressure. “This victory reflects our unity and determination,” Mbabazi said. “Esther’s contribution was immense, and Sarah’s spell made all the difference.”

As the Victoria Pearls gear up for the second T20I on Wednesday, set for 3:00 PM EAT at the same venue, fans can anticipate another fierce contest.
