Minister Ogwang Hails Cubs’ World Cup Qualification as ‘Football Made in Uganda’

State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has praised the Uganda U17 national team, the Cubs, for their historic qualification to the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup, describing the achievement as a reflection of Uganda’s growing stature in international football.

In a statement celebrating the Cubs’ 2-1 win over The Gambia in the playoff held in Morocco, Hon. Ogwang commended both the players and the technical staff for their remarkable effort and commitment.

“Congratulations are still in order for the Uganda U17 men’s football team for qualifying for our maiden FIFA World Cup in Qatar,” Ogwang said. “A big credit goes to the players for the self-belief, and the technical staff for their dedication. You deserve a huge handshake.”

Uganda’s victory over The Gambia, sealed by a brace from forward James Bogere after an early setback, marked the country’s first ever qualification to a FIFA World Cup at any level in football history.

The Minister emphasized that the triumph represents more than just a win on the pitch, calling it a symbol of national progress in sports development.

“Now this is football made in Uganda! The sky is the limit for Sports in Uganda,” he declared.

Hon. Ogwang’s remarks come as Ugandans continue to celebrate the Cubs’ milestone, which has drawn widespread praise from government officials, football authorities, and the public.

The team, led by Coach Brian Ssenyondo, now prepares for the FIFA U17 World Cup set to be held in Qatar.
