The football world is in shock following the tragic death of Gabon international Aaron Boupendza, who passed away at the age of 28 after reportedly falling from a building in China.
The striker, who represented his country at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), earned 35 caps for the national team, leaving behind a legacy as one of Gabon’s brightest talents.
Boupendza had joined Chinese club Zhejiang FC in Hangzhou earlier this year, transferring from Romanian side Rapid Bucharest.
His football journey began at CF Mounana in Gabon, before he showcased his skills across France, Portugal, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
Gabon’s football federation, Fegafoot, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, stating, “Boupendza is remembered as a great striker who made his mark during the [Afcon] in Cameroon.” They extended their condolences to his family and the entire football community mourning his loss.
Tributes poured in, including from Gabon’s president-elect Gen Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who described Boupendza as “a talented centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese football.”
