Uganda’s Rugby Sevens Squad Takes on Kenya in Solidarity Camp Before Africa Sevens

Uganda’s Rugby Sevens Squad Takes on Kenya in Solidarity Camp Before Africa Sevens

The Uganda National men’s rugby sevens team traveled to Kenya on Monday night as part of their camp to prepare for the upcoming Africa Sevens tournament.

They are currently in Nakuru for a one-week solidarity performance camp hosted at St. Andrew’s Turi.

During this camp in Kenya, the team is expected to engage in various training exercises and preparation games, including a match against the Kenya Sevens national team.
This preparation is crucial as they aim to defend their title in the upcoming competition in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The 2023 Rugby Africa Sevens is scheduled to kick off on September 16th and 17th. This tournament serves as Africa’s qualification event for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, taking place over two consecutive days.

Uganda’s national team is placed in Pool C, alongside Algeria, Zimbabwe, and Burkina Faso, forming part of the 12-team tournament.

According to the Uganda Rugby Union, the national team will be in camp and will continue their preparations through non-residential and residential training until September 14th. Following that, they will travel to Harare, Zimbabwe.

Uganda is currently the defending champions of the Africa Sevens, having emerged victorious in the 2022 series held in Uganda. They secured the championship by defeating Zimbabwe in the finals at Kyadondo Rugby Ground.
They beat Zimbabwe, 28-00, in the Cup Final to be crowned African champions as they went unbeaten over the two-day event in which they conceded only three tries.

The team in the current camp includes players such as Karim Arinaitwe, Davis Shimwa, Timothy Mugisha Arocko, Denis Etwau, Aaron Tukei, Roy Bartholomew Kizito, Pius Ogena, Alex Aturinda, Philip Wokorach, Hosana Opileni, Isaac Massangazira, Allan Olango Olweny, Byron Oketayot, Nobert Sexton Okeny, Adrian Kasito, Mubarak Wandera, Mark Isaac Osuna, Aziz Bagalana, Faragi Odugo, and Aaron Ofoyrwoth.

The management team comprises Tolbert Onyango Omolo, Allan Otim, Samuel Asimwe Rwakijuma, and Michael Wandera.
