Seven-time Uganda Premier League champions Express have been slapped with a UGX 1,000,000 fine by the FUFA Disciplinary Panel (FDP) following their fans’ violent conduct during their heated 2-2 draw against Vipers SC on April 11 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

The ruling came after Express supporters hurled bottles at match officials in protest of a last-minute equaliser by Vipers, which they claimed should not have stood.

The incident violated Article 14 of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code, prompting the FDP to issue a stern warning alongside a suspended two-point and two-goal deduction, to be enforced if such misconduct recurs.

Prior to the Vipers game, a Express fans, led by Julius Bakunda had pledged UGX 10 million to the players if they defeated the league leaders; an incentive that seemed on course until the Venoms’ late comeback.

Express had taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half, thanks to a brace from captain Emmanuel Wasswa.

However, Vipers staged a dramatic comeback, with Allan Okello reducing the deficit before Milton Karisa and Gusto Mulongo combined deep into stoppage time to snatch a point.

Furious Express fans accused the referee of allowing play to continue beyond regulation time, leading to chaotic scenes at full-time.

In its ruling, the FDP stated: “Express supporters threw bottles at match officials, constituting acts of hooliganism. This is a serious breach of the Code.”

The club has 14 days to pay the fine and has been warned against future misconduct.

Express, currently 9th with 32 points from 24 games, will look to put the incident behind them as they host UPDF on Thursday, April 24, at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

Meanwhile, NEC head coach Hussein Mbalangu has been handed a two-match ban and fined UGX 1,000,000 for his explosive post-match comments following his side’s 2-1 victory over Kitara on April 10.
