Uganda Names Quartet for Historic World Relays Mixed Relay Debut

Uganda’s athletics history has reached a new milestone with the nation qualifying for the 4x400m mixed relay at the World Relays 2025, marking its debut in the event.

The competition will take place in Guangzhou, China, from May 10 to 11, and offers teams a chance to secure automatic qualification for the World Athletics Championships later this year in Tokyo, Japan.

The seventh edition of the World Relays, hosted for the first time in China, will feature 32 countries vying for top honors and qualification slots. Previous editions of the event have been held in the Bahamas, Japan, and Poland.

Uganda’s qualified team consists of four sprinters—two men and two women: Adoli Haron, Chan Wengo Godfrey, Shida Leni, and Maureen Akiiki Banura.

The squad is expected to depart for China on May 7, representing the country’s growing ambition in sprint events.

Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet praised the achievement, especially as it coincides with the federation’s centenary celebrations.

“We have tried and failed in the past years, but this year, God answered our prayers. It’s a dream come true. As we are celebrating 100 years of excellence, this milestone is good for us,” said Otuchet.

Athlete Adoli Haron emphasized the team’s competitive intent ahead of the event.

“Our goal is to finish among the top eight and secure that automatic qualification for Tokyo. We are not going to participate but to compete for excellence,” he stated.
