Ethiopian Tilahun Nigussie smashed the Belfast Marathon record today, winning in 2:13:37, four seconds faster than the previous best set in 2012.
Despite a late wrong turn, the 26-year-old powered to victory.
Kenya’s Millicent Kibet won the women’s race in 2:38:30. Drogheda’s Aaron Hanlon (2:27:06) and Annadale Strider Stephen Connolly (2:29:30), who claimed the NI title, were second and third in the men’s race.
Moroccan Lalla Aziza finished second in the women’s race, with Northern Ireland’s Gladys Ganiel third.
Aghadowey’s Jayne Bleakley made history as the first female wheelchair finisher in Belfast, clocking 2:28:27 in her debut marathon. A record number of participants took part in the event.
