The Stars Shine No More: Bright Stars Relegated After More Than a Decade in the Top Flight

Soltilo Bright Stars’ long-standing tenure in the Uganda Premier League has come to a heart-wrenching end.

This is after the club suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of UPDF on Tuesday evening at Kavumba Recreation Grounds, compounded by Mbarara City’s narrow 1-0 win over Wakiso Giants.

Bright Stars’ relegation sees the club drop to the FUFA Big League for the first time since their historic promotion in the 2012/13 season.

Joseph Jjanjali, a former Bright Stars forward who once dazzled fans at the same venue, delivered the fatal blow with a composed finish just 50 seconds into the game.

Despite the gravity of the goal, Jjanjali chose not to celebrate, a gesture that spoke volumes about his respect for his former side.

Founded in 1997, Bright Stars’ rise to prominence began in earnest with their FUFA Big League triumph.

The club then embarked on an impressive spell in Uganda’s top tier that has lasted more than 10 years, consistently punching above their weight and nurturing local talent.

However, the 2024/25 season has been nothing short of disastrous, as the team’s decline has been both systematic and evident.

Off the pitch, governance turmoil has crippled the club’s internal cohesion.

On the technical side, former head coach Joseph Mutyaba was relieved of his duties on November 1, 2024, following a string of poor results.

His replacement, technical director Ian Mutenda, assumed interim coaching responsibilities and even secured a 1-0 win over Kitara in his first match in charge in November.

However, since that promising result, the team has recorded only two more wins; against UPDF and Police, while losing 13 and drawing four.

Player departures midway through the campaign further weakened the squad.

The exodus included first-choice goalkeeper Hassan Matovu and dependable players like midfielder Joseph Marvin Youngman, who returned to Vipers in January, among others.

With just three games left in the season, Bright Stars sit on a meagre 16 points, mathematically unable to escape the drop zone.

They join Mbale Heroes, who were relegated last week, in confirming their place in next season’s FUFA Big League.

Meanwhile, the relegation battle is far from over for Wakiso Giants. Currently in 14th place with 20 points, they face a daunting final stretch.

Steven Bengo’s men must win all their remaining fixtures: against KCCA (away), URA (away), and Police (home); and hope Mbarara City falters in at least two of their last three matches.

Mbarara, with 26 points, need just one more win to confirm their stay in the top flight, making the odds heavily stacked against the Purple Sharks.
