Tolbert Onyango: From Kenya Schoolboy to Ugandan Rugby Icon

Platinum Credit Heathens’ new head coach Tolbert Onyango is no stranger to Ugandan rugby.

Widely regarded as one of the sport’s most experienced figures in the region, Onyango’s journey from a young player in Kenya to a continental title-winning coach in Uganda spans more than three decades of consistent dedication to the game.

Born in Kenya, Onyango first picked up a rugby ball during his time at Nairobi School, where his raw athleticism and natural understanding of the game quickly set him apart.

In 1993, he joined Mwamba RFC, one of Kenya’s premier rugby clubs, marking the start of his senior playing career.

His connection to Ugandan rugby was forged in 1998 when he moved to Kampala and signed for Heathens RFC.

A powerful presence on the field, Onyango went on to captain the Kyadondo-based side in 2002.

When he stepped away from playing he began his transition into coaching, a path that would soon define his legacy.

Onyango’s first major coaching role came in 2014 when he was appointed head coach of Buffaloes Rugby Club.

A year later, he was handed the reins of Uganda’s national men’s sevens team, launching what would become one of the most successful coaching tenures in the country’s rugby history.

Under his leadership, Uganda won the Africa Men’s 7s Championship four times and made regular appearances on the global stage.

Onyango guided the team through multiple Commonwealth Games and two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments, in addition to three Olympic Games Repêchage events.

He also oversaw Uganda’s participation in various international competitions, including the Safari 7s and World Rugby Challenger Series.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Onyango is revered for his deep tactical knowledge, player development skills, and commitment to growing the sport locally.

His long association with Uganda Rugby has not only produced historic wins but also nurtured a generation of players who have gone on to represent the country with distinction.

Now, in 2025, Onyango returns to where his Ugandan journey began, Heathens RFC, as head coach.

While his appointment marks a new chapter for the club, it also reflects a full-circle moment in his storied career.

With decades of experience, both as a player and coach, Onyango steps into the role with a clear understanding of the club’s culture and expectations.
