Oscar Piastri of McLaren stunned Max Verstappen to secure pole position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix after a qualifying session marred by a massive accident for Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda, who thankfully walked away uninjured.
Piastri edged Verstappen by just 0.034 seconds despite late traffic.
Norris, initially third, dropped to fourth behind Russell. Aston Martin impressed with Alonso in fifth and Stroll in eighth, while Ferrari struggled, with Leclerc and Hamilton outside the top 10 at their home race.
Tsunoda’s terrifying high-speed crash caused one of two red flags, with Alpine’s Colapinto also involved in a separate incident.
Piastri credited his team after a tricky session, while Verstappen noted tyre struggles.
