Mugumya Confirms Uganda’s Plans to Join the Africa Olympics School Games

Uganda is preparing to make its debut at the inaugural Africa Olympics School Games, scheduled for August 2025 in Algeria.

The announcement was made by Canon Duncan Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports, during the closing ceremony of the 2025 USSSA National Ball Games 1 Championship in Bukedea.

“I have good news for you,” Mugumya told athletes and officials at the event. “Uganda is planning to take part in the Africa Olympics School Games, and we shall select teams from among you to represent the country. So I urge you to keep improving your game.”

Mugumya praised the championship for its growing professionalism and integrity, noting a marked improvement from previous editions.

“In the past, we had incidents of coaches fighting on the pitch. This time, we’ve witnessed professionalism and maturity. And most importantly, we are winning the fight against mercenaries. I am now 95% sure that we are fielding genuine students,” he said.

He attributed the progress to increased vigilance and better enforcement of eligibility standards, adding that the tournament’s current conduct reflects positively on the development of school sports in the country.

Mugumya also commended the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, for her support of sports development in Bukedea.

He described Bukedea Comprehensive Stadium, host of the just-concluded championships and the 2024 FEASSA Games, as a facility of national and international value.

“This stadium is not just for Bukedea, it is a national treasure and an international asset,” he said.

As the week-long championship concluded, Mugumya urged young athletes to stay disciplined and committed, reminding them that their performance at such events could lead to future continental representation.
