Top Five Ugandan Players In Europe, And How They’ve Performed This Season

Some Ugandans ply their trade in Europe, and in this article, we appraise five of the country’s best players and how well or otherwise they’ve showcased beyond borders, at their respective clubs.

Elio Capradossi (As Cittadella – Italy)

Having grappled with injuries before and shortly after joining Italian Serie B side AS Cittadella, Capradossi has since settled in impeccably at the club, managing 16 appearances since his move last year in November.

While the team has been relegated to the Italian Serie C, the 29-year-old, who recently donned the Uganda Cranes’ armband in the absence of skipper Khalid Aucho, has been a mainstay in the team, completing 90 minutes in 10 of the 16 matches, including eight in the last nine.

Aziz Kayondo (Slovan Liberec – Czech Republic)

Left-back Kayondo has been one of the most salient and go-to players at Slovan Liberec, featuring 25 times for the team in the Czech top-flight, helping them to seventh on the table, and into the semifinal playoffs in the run to the championship.

The workaholic, 22, has chipped in with a goal and an assist to the good, in what has only been his debut campaign at the club, having joined them from MFK Vyškov.

Rogers Mato (FK Vardar – North Macedonia)

Winger Rogers Mato has been juggled into featuring for two North Macedonian sides, including Brera Strumica in the top-flight and later, FK Vardar in the same division, making a total of 33 matches.

At Brera, he made 19 appearances, scoring thrice and adding four assists to his name. The relentless attacker hasn’t tired at Varder, as he has scored six goals, with an assist in 14 matches, a respectable return.

Toby Sibbick (Wigan – England)

Versatile defender Sibbick has accumulated some of the most minutes for Ugandan players plying their trade in Europe, featuring 39 times across the League One, FA Cup, EFL Cup and the EFL Trophy.

His biggest highlight was playing the entire 90, as Wigan narrowly lost 1-0 to Fulham in the FA Cup at the Fourth Round. Rodrigo Muniz’s brace overpowered Sibbick and the entire team’s resolve, but it was an experience worth it.

Travis Mutyaba (Girondins Bordeaux – France)

In his debut season at French fourth division side Girondins Bordeaux, Mutyaba has struggled to stamp his mark, despite racking up 21 senior team appearances, many of which were cameos. He has yet to register a direct goal involvement.

The Cranes jewel has been forced into featuring for the reserve team at some point, playing three games there, and registering a goal to the good.
