Bayern Munich Snags German Defender Jonathan Tah on Free Transfer

Bayern Munich have officially signed German international defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga champions announced today.

The 29-year-old has inked a four-year deal, keeping him in Munich until 2029.

Tah joins Bayern after a decade at Leverkusen, where he played a pivotal role in their historic unbeaten league and cup double in the 2023-24 season.

He had informed Leverkusen he wouldn’t extend his contract beyond 2025, leading to a big farewell at his final home game in May.

“I’m very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together,” Tah said in the club statement.

This signing addresses Bayern’s need for a center-back after Eric Dier’s departure to Monaco. Bayern had tried to sign Tah last summer but wouldn’t meet Leverkusen’s asking price.

Sporting director Christoph Freund praised the acquisition: “In Jonathan Tah we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality, who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defense.”

Tah, a Hamburg native, has become a key figure in the German national team, earning 35 caps since 2016. He’s started nearly every international game he’s been available for since September 2023 and is part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the Nations League finals next month.

Germany faces Portugal in the semi-finals in Munich on June 4.

While Bayern secured Tah, their pursuit of Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz seems to have ended, with Wirtz now likely headed to Liverpool after Leverkusen confirmed “concrete interest” from the Premier League winners.
