Shaban In, Dembe Out as Uganda Cranes Begin Morocco Camp

The Uganda Cranes arrived in Morocco in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, ahead of their scheduled international friendlies against Cameroon and The Gambia.

The team is set to face Cameroon on Thursday, June 6, before taking on The Gambia on Sunday, June 9, with both matches part of preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) later this year.

A late change to the 28-man squad confirmed by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) saw striker Shaban Muhammad drafted in to replace John Paul Dembe, who withdrew from the squad due to undisclosed reasons.

The current camp is expected to help head coach Paul Joseph Put assess his options ahead of CHAN 2024, which only features players active in domestic leagues.

While CHAN preparations officially begin in July, these two fixtures provide an early opportunity to evaluate fringe and locally-based talent.

Several senior players, including captain Khalid Aucho, defenders Aziz Kayondo and Bevis Mugabi, and midfielder Ronald Ssekiganda, are absent from the squad due to injury or selection strategy, with Coach Put seemingly using these fixtures to test depth and domestic readiness.

The Cranes will train in Morocco in the build-up to Thursday’s match against Cameroon, with the technical team expected to provide further updates during the course of the camp.
