Italy’s head coach Luciano Spalletti sensationally announced his own sacking on Sunday, just two days after a dismal 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Norway.
The 66-year-old revealed Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina informed him of his dismissal.
Despite the news, Spalletti will take charge of Monday’s game against Moldova, which will be his last.
Spalletti, appointed in 2023, has overseen a disappointing spell, including a Last 16 exit at Euro 2024 and just 11 wins in 23 matches.
He expressed a desire to stay but accepted responsibility for the team’s “difficult moment.”
