Crested Cranes Announce Squad for 2025 CECAFA Women’s Championship

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed a new kick-off date for the 2025 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship, pushing the start of the regional showpiece by one day.

The tournament, initially scheduled to get underway on Thursday, June 12, will now begin on Friday, June 13 at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

According to Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA’s Competitions Director, the change in schedule was necessitated by logistical setbacks faced by the South Sudan team, who were forced to arrive late.

“We have had to push the kick-off by a day as the South Sudan team, because of some challenges, can only arrive on Wednesday,” Mossi stated.

The revised fixture will see defending champions Uganda (Crested Cranes), opening their campaign against Burundi on Friday at 4:00 PM, while hosts Tanzania will take on South Sudan in the second match of the day.

The CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship, which will run from June 13 to 21, features five nations: Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan, battling in a round-robin format.

The tournament offers a crucial platform for teams to fine-tune preparations ahead of continental engagements such as the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Crested Cranes, who lifted the title during the last edition in 2022, touched down in Tanzania on Tuesday and is currently camped at Royal Village Hotel.

They held their first training session on Wednesday morning at the Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) Stadium and returned to the same venue for a second session early Thursday at 8:00 AM.

Uganda will be eager to make a strong start against a motivated Burundi side and signal their intent to retain the regional title.

With momentum and continuity on their side, the Crested Cranes will look to replicate their 2022 form and reassert their dominance in women’s football across East and Central Africa.

Following the conclusion of the women’s football championship, CECAFA will turn its attention to the inaugural CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship, scheduled to take place from July 7 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
