Uganda Rugby Union has named a fresh committee to take charge of the country’s National 7s Series, kicking off a new chapter in the development of the fast-paced rugby format.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the URU confirmed that Desire Derekford Mugumisa will chair the new committee, supported by a team of six that includes both returning and fresh faces.
Tournament Director Rachel Kampire retains her role, while Adam Kabalega takes over as Head of Operations.
The rest of the team includes Immaculate Nanyonyi (Operations Assistant), Ronnie Kyazze (Assistant Tournament Director), and Vian Matsiko as the new URU Technical Lead.
The Union said the new committee will be responsible for steering the strategic, operational, and competitive direction of the series, which has grown into a key national sporting event.
With the 7s format continuing to evolve worldwide, the new team will be expected to maintain Uganda’s momentum while adapting to changes in the global landscape.
This transition comes as the outgoing committee, led by Erasmus Aredo, wraps up a successful stint that began in 2022.
Under his leadership, the series introduced a bidding system for host circuits, combined men’s and women’s events, and expanded to full two-day tournaments in both central and upcountry locations.
The URU also highlighted improvements in player welfare and logistics support during Aredo’s tenure, which helped the National 7s Series gain traction both locally and beyond.
Now, with a revamped committee in place, the URU says it’s confident the new team will take the game even further.
“They inherit both the momentum and the responsibility to navigate a pivotal period for 7s rugby,” the statement read. “We are confident in their ability to uphold the values of the game and elevate the stature of the Nile Special National 7s Series.”
The URU Technical Committee has pledged full backing for the new group and urged all rugby stakeholders in the country to rally behind the leadership as they take on this crucial role.
