CHAN 2024: Mucureezi Upbeat as Uganda Cranes Step Up Preparations

The Uganda Cranes held their second non-residential training session on Tuesday morning at the Luzira Prisons Grounds, as preparations intensify ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania from August 2 to 30.

The session, led by head coach Morley Byekwaso and his assistant Fred Muhumuza, follows a positive start to camp on Monday and featured ball work, tactical drills, and small-sided games.

The team is scheduled to return to training on Wednesday for their third session, as the technical team looks to build cohesion and match sharpness ahead of the regional tournament.

Paul Mucureezi, who was added to the squad in place of teenager James Bogere, expressed optimism about the team’s preparations and morale.

“Our preparations for the tournament are going quite well,” said Mucureezi. “The boys are doing well, they’re really fine. You can see there’s some fun and good football. I’m very optimistic that the coming CHAN tournament is going to be a good one.”

Mucureezi’s return to national duty comes at a crucial moment, as Uganda eyes a historic run in a tournament where they have never gone beyond the group stages in six previous attempts.

The midfielder’s experience is expected to boost a youthful squad drawn entirely from domestic league clubs, in line with CHAN regulations.

Uganda, placed in Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger, will host all their group matches and the third-place playoff at the refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
