The construction of the $129 million (Shs490.2 billion) Hoima City Stadium is progressing rapidly, with the main football stadium structure now 70% complete and expected to be finished by July, according to project contractors.

The Turkish construction firm, Ms Suuma, has assured that the entire multi-purpose facility will be handed over to the government by December 2025, well ahead of schedule.

Project Manager Murat Altun confirmed the progress during a recent site visit by Hoima City leaders, including local council officials and the Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Moses Muyambi.

Altun stated that the main 20,000-seater outdoor stadium is already at an advanced stage, with roofing works underway and seating installed.

“The main stadium is at 70% completion and will be done by July,” Altum said, adding that the auxiliary football pitch, a mini indoor arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and outdoor courts, will be finalized before December.

“We are working day and night to ensure the stadium is ready for handover to the Ministry of Sports by December this year.”

Construction, which began in September 2024, has been accelerated by over 1,000 workers operating day and night.

The 34-acre sports complex is a key part of Uganda’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Geoffrey Tumwesige, Kyentale Ward Councilor, praised the government for the project, emphasizing its potential to spur economic growth.

“This stadium will attract visitors from across Uganda and beyond. Our youth should prepare by engaging in agriculture to supply food to the expected influx of tourists,” Tumwesige advised.

Bosco Muhanuzi, Mayor of Hoima East Division, described the facility as a catalyst for regional development, while Deputy RCC Moses Muyambi urged residents to leverage business opportunities in hospitality, tourism, and trade.

“Now is the time to invest. Government programs like PDM and Emyooga can help locals start businesses to benefit from the stadium’s operations,” Muyambi said.

He also highlighted the stadium’s role in nurturing future sports talent, stating, “This facility will help Uganda produce the next generation of football stars.”

Once completed, the Hoima City Stadium will boast a 20,000-seater main stadium for football, rugby, and athletics, 2,000-capacity indoor arena, an auxiliary football pitch, a semi-Olympic swimming pool and outdoor courts.
