MTN-Sponsored Busoga Masaza Cup Kicks Off July 12 with Bold Focus on Youth Protection

The 8th edition of the Busoga Masaza Cup has officially kicked off with a bold message and bigger ambitions.

Launched at the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Jinja City, the tournament returns on July 12 with Budiope County taking on Bukono County in the opening match.

This year’s competition, sponsored by MTN Uganda, is more than just a football showcase. Under the theme “Men are the pillars in stopping teenage pregnancies,” the tournament aims to rally communities behind a powerful social cause.

Speaking at the launch, the Kingdom’s Minister of Sports, Amin Nkono Bboosa, called on men across the region to take responsibility for safeguarding the next generation.

“Beyond the football excitement, this tournament carries a deeper message,” Bboosa said. “It’s a call for men to step up and protect our youth.”

All 11 counties will compete, including defending champions Butembe County, who are aiming to retain the title they won last year. “We know everyone’s coming for us, but we’re prepared,” said the Butembe County manager. “Our goal is clear—we’re here to defend the trophy for our people.”

MTN Uganda has pumped UGX 550 million into this year’s tournament. Ian Mugambe, speaking on behalf of MTN, emphasized the company’s focus on using sports to make a lasting impact. “The Masaza Cup is not just about football. It’s about uniting communities, nurturing talent, and addressing issues like teenage pregnancies,” he said.

Second Deputy Prime Minister Osman Noor echoed that message, describing the tournament as a “movement for change.” He praised sport as a tool for social transformation and highlighted its reach at the grassroots.

The stakes are high, with prize money set at UGX 13 million for the champions, UGX 9 million for the runners-up, UGX 6 million for third place, and UGX 4 million for fourth place.
