The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a dramatic increase in prize money for the upcoming TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco.
The winner will now take home $1 million — double the amount awarded in the last edition — while the total prize pool for the tournament has been raised by 45% to $3.475 million.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision on Thursday, calling it a major step forward in the organisation’s efforts to elevate women’s football across the continent.
“CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of women’s football in Africa,” Motsepe said.
“The 100% increase in the winner’s prize and the overall 45% rise in total prize money should help improve salaries for players, coaches and staff. We are excited by the rising quality, viewership and sponsor interest in this tournament.”
The prize structure for WAFCON 2024 will see the runner-up pocket $500,000, while the third and fourth-placed teams will earn $350,000 and $300,000 respectively.
Quarter-finalists will each receive $200,000, third-placed group finishers get $150,000, and even the fourth-placed teams in the three four-team groups will earn $125,000 each.
The announcement comes as CAF pushes to make WAFCON a bigger draw globally.
The slogan for this year’s event — Born Winners — and a new trophy were unveiled recently as part of the campaign to elevate the tournament’s profile.
WAFCON 2024 is expected to see a significant rise in fan turnout, television viewership and commercial partners, building on the momentum of recent editions.
