The funeral for Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva will take place on Saturday morning in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.
Father Jose Manuel Macedo, parish priest of the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in São Cosme, confirmed the service will be held at 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT). The two brothers will be laid to rest in the community where their journey began.
The town, located just east of Porto, has been in mourning since news broke of the tragic car accident that claimed their lives earlier this week in Spain. Jota, 28, and André, 26, died when their car veered off the road in Zamora following a tyre blowout.
Local authorities and parish leaders are expecting a large turnout for the funeral, with fans, teammates, and members of the Portuguese football community expected to attend or follow proceedings closely.
The service will be held at the same church where Jota was married just two weeks ago. That moment, which should have marked a joyful chapter in his life, now casts a heartbreaking contrast to the sorrow that’s followed.
