Jota Honoured at Women’s Euros and Club World Cup

Emotional tributes to Diogo Jota continued on Thursday as players and fans paused to remember the late Liverpool and Portugal star at two major football tournaments.

Before kick-off at the Women’s Euro 2025 match between Portugal and Spain in Switzerland, both teams gathered in a silent tribute at the centre circle.

The Portuguese players stood shoulder to shoulder with their Spanish counterparts, many visibly emotional during the moment of reflection.

In the stands, Portugal fans held up banners and photographs of Jota, turning the stadium into a sea of red and black in his honour.

One banner simply read: “Para Sempre Connosco” — “Forever With Us.” The tribute came just days after Jota’s tragic death in a car accident in Spain, alongside his younger brother André Silva.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in the United States, Club World Cup teams also paid their respects.

Players from Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain held moments of silence during training ahead of this weekend’s quarter-final matches.

Among them were several former club and international teammates of Jota. PSG’s tribute stood out, led by the four Portuguese players in their squad, who appeared sombre and visibly shaken as they gathered in remembrance of their countryman.

Jota’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief throughout the football world, with tributes crossing borders, genders, and competitions.
