Fluminense, the Brazilian underdogs, have defied expectations by reaching the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals.
They defeated Saudi club Al-Hilal 2-1 at Camping World Stadium, setting up a thrilling clash with Premier League side Chelsea on Tuesday in New Jersey.
Matheus Martinelli gave Fluminense the lead in the 40th minute. Al-Hilal equalized through Marcos Leonardo in the 51st minute, his fourth goal of the tournament.
However, Fluminense secured their victory when substitute Hércules slotted home the winner.
The win is particularly remarkable given Fluminense’s domestic league performance last season, where they narrowly avoided relegation.
Veteran players, including 44-year-old goalkeeper Fábio and 40-year-old defender Thiago Silva, played crucial roles in their triumph.
