Arsenal Secure Zubimendi in Key Summer Signing

Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for nearly £60 million.

The 26-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal, is the Gunners’ second summer acquisition, following goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s £5 million arrival from Chelsea.

Arsenal are also reportedly pursuing Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres for £70 million.

Zubimendi, renowned as one of Europe’s top passers, brings significant experience after 236 appearances for Real Sociedad. He previously turned down Liverpool last summer.

“This is a huge moment in my career… Arsenal’s style of play is a good fit for me,” said Zubimendi. Manager Mikel Arteta added, “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team.”

The signing of Zubimendi culminates a lengthy pursuit by Arsenal, which began with initial discussions last summer.

The club, led by then-sporting director Edu and his deputy Jason Ayto, strategically planned his acquisition despite earlier financial constraints and interest from Liverpool.

Arsenal opted to pay more than Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause to spread the cost, avoiding a single upfront payment.

Concerns about Real Madrid potentially hijacking the deal, especially with Xabi Alonso’s move to Real as coach, were ultimately unfounded.

The agreement was secured months ago, with Zubimendi remaining committed to his word. Jason Ayto, who became acting sporting director, oversaw the finalization of the deal.
