Rugby World Cup Trophy Arrives in Uganda

History has been made on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

The men’s Rugby World Cup trophy, officially known as ‘The Webb Ellis Cup’, is in Uganda for its historic tour.

The Webb Ellis Cup, accompanied by World Rugby’s Vice Chair Jonathan Webb and Chief of International Relations David Carrigy, was received at the Entebbe International Airport by Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah and Uganda Rugby President Godwin Kayangwe.

It will be on Ugandan soil from July 6-8. This is going to be the highlight event at the start of the 2025 men’s Rugby Africa Cup.

The Webb Ellis Cup will be hosted at a cocktail at the Speke Resort Hotel in Munyonyo, where the teams and officials are residing on Sunday evening. On Monday, it will visit the State House where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officially receive it in the country.

When the Rugby Africa Cup tournament kicks off on Tuesday, the Webb Ellis Cup will be on display at the Namboole Stadium for general viewing.

The winner of the Rugby Africa Cup will qualify directly for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

  • Made out of: Silver-gilt (gilded silver)
  • Named after: William Webb Ellis (regarded as founding father of rugby)
  • Awarded to: Winner of the men’s Rugby World Cup
  • First Awarded: 1987
  • Past Winners: South Africa (1995, 2007, 2019, 2023), New Zealand (1987, 2011, 2015), Australia (1991, 1999), England (2003)
