Team Uganda Ready to Shine at World Amateur Chess Championship in Muscat

Team Uganda is ready to embark on a historic journey as they kick off their campaign at the World Amateur Chess Championship in Muscat. The team, consisting of FIDE Master (FM) Haruna Nsubuga and Candidate Master (CM) Faruk-Fauza Karim Kizza, is poised to make a significant mark on the international chess stage.

In a touching gesture of solidarity, the Ugandan chess community offered a heartfelt prayer, blessing the team and wishing them success on their journey.

The team departed for Muscat yesterday evening, on the 31st of October 2023. Throughout the championship, Team Uganda will be accommodated at the Wyndham Hotel in Muscat, providing them with a comfortable and supportive base.

FM Haruna Nsubuga, the reigning 2022 Africa Amateur Champion, and CM Faruk-Fauza Karim Kizza, a bronze medalist from the same event, will represent Uganda with unwavering determination.

Participation in this prestigious World Championship event holds immense significance for Uganda. Not only does it showcase the nation’s extraordinary chess talent, but it also serves as a platform for growth and excellence. In an exclusive interview, both players shared their expectations for the tournament.

CM Faruk-Fauza Karim Kizza, who possesses a lower chess rating, sees this as an advantage. “Being underestimated is my plan; it allows me to use it as a disguise to surprise my opponents,” he said, emphasizing his unique approach to the game.

Africa Chess champion FM Haruna Nsubuga, on the other hand, envisions the event as an opportunity to connect with fellow chess players from Oman and beyond. He expressed his hopes for networking and building valuable connections beyond the competition.

The World Amateur Chess Championships are set to happen at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman, from November 1st to November 11th.
