Ugandan Star, Sibbick Switches From Wigan to Burton Albion

Ugandan international and versatile defender Toby Sibbick has officially completed a move to Burton Albion from Wigan Athletic in the English League One (third tier), for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old, who has signed a two-year contract at Burton, has exited Wigan after just one campaign, where he exhibited strong and impressive performances, eventually racking up to 39 appearances.

Burton head coach Gary Bowyer has hailed the acquisition: “He will add physicality to our back line with his size and pace and his ability to defend duels will help with how we want to play this year,” he was quoted by the club’s website.

“We look forward to working with him and I have loved the connection that we have made through our conversations in the lead up to his signing.”

Sibbick’s Rise

Sibbick began his career in the youth ranks at AFC Wimbledon in the back end of the 2016/17 season.

Two seasons and 38 appearances later for the Dons, he progressed to the Championship and joined Barnsley in the summer of 2019.

He made over 50 appearances during his two-and-a-half years at Oakwell.

The highlight of Sibbick’s time with the Tykes will be the 2020/21 campaign, where the Yorkshire side narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing in the play-off semi-finals to Swansea City.

Throughout his time at Barnsley, Sibbick had brief loan spells with KV Ostend and Hearts, before joining the latter on a permanent deal in January 2022.

During his time in Scotland, the 26-year-old amassed 88 appearances for the Edinburgh outfit – including multiple appearances in European competition.

The right-footed defender returned to English football last season after two seasons. He went on make 31 appearances in the League One for Wigan– 22 of which were from the start.

International Showing

Sibbick made his international debut for Uganda back in March 2024, playing the first 45 minutes of their 2-2 draw with Ghana.

His second appearance for the Cranes came in the most recent international break (June 2025), featuring in the 1-1 draw against Gambia.
