The rematch between Irish boxers Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan has been officially upgraded to a world title fight, with the vacant IBF welterweight belt now on the line.
This marks a historic first, as it’ll be the first time two boxers from the island of Ireland have competed for a world title.
Matchroom Boxing confirmed the IBF title, recently vacated by Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, will be up for grabs.
While a date and venue are still unconfirmed, Saturday, September 13th, has been floated as a potential date, with Windsor Park being the preferred venue.
Matchroom Boxing’s Frank Smith indicated positive talks with the Irish Football Association about the stadium.
Their first controversial bout on March 1st saw Crocker win by disqualification after Donovan was thrown out for punching after the bell.
Donovan’s appeal led to this rematch, which was then elevated to a world title bout due to the belt’s vacancy.
