Uganda’s national women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, have arrived safely in Cairo ahead of a crucial training camp as they intensify preparations for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
The team touched down at Cairo International Airport earlier on Friday and will be based at the Hassan Mostafa Sports Hall for the next few days.
While in the Egyptian capital, the Gazelles will participate in a series of buildup matches against Egypt, Rwanda, and Cameroon—three teams also bound for the continental tournament later this month.
The friendly games are scheduled to run from July 12 to 15 and are part of a broader two-week camp designed to boost match fitness, strengthen team chemistry, and fine-tune tactics ahead of the AfroBasket, which tips off on July 26 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza earlier highlighted the importance of the Egypt camp, noting that the quality of opposition would help the technical team identify key areas to improve.
Uganda is drawn in Group C at AfroBasket alongside Senegal and Guinea.
Following the friendlies, the Gazelles will continue training in Alexandria until July 24 before flying to Abidjan for the tournament.
Uganda qualified for the 2025 AfroBasket by winning the FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo last year, defeating hosts Egypt 74–63 in the final.
