Liverpool to Retire Jota’s No. 20 Shirt

Liverpool will retire the number 20 shirt in a poignant tribute to forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

The decision, made in consultation with Jota’s family, ensures the Portugal international “will forever be Liverpool’s number 20” across all levels of the club.

Jota, 28, and his brother were killed when their Lamborghini left the road due to a tyre blowout.

Jota was returning to Liverpool for pre-season training.

The club stated the retirement recognizes Jota’s “immeasurable contribution” on the pitch and his “profound personal impact” off it.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances. He helped the Reds win the FA Cup and League Cup (twice), and the Premier League title last season.

“This is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,” said Fenway Sports Group chief executive Michael Edwards. “By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal.”

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and the Liverpool squad recently visited Anfield to pay their respects amidst an outpouring of tributes.

The brothers’ funeral was held last Saturday in Gondomar, Portugal.

Liverpool will commemorate Jota and Silva with a minute’s silence and other tributes during their pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday.
