Gazelles End Cairo Friendlies on a High with Win Over Cameroon

Uganda’s women’s national basketball team, the Gazelles ended their warm-up games on a winning note with a spirited 69-62 victory over Cameroon on Tuesday evening at HM Arena in Cairo.

The triumph came after back-to-back losses to Egypt and Rwanda, providing a timely morale boost ahead of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket set to tip off later this month in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

Uganda dominated early proceedings, taking a 26-17 lead in the first quarter.

Although Cameroon tightened their defence in the second period to cut the deficit to 42-36 at halftime, the Gazelles maintained their composure.

The third quarter saw Uganda survive a turnover-laden spell, clinging to a 56-48 advantage. Despite Cameroon’s late surge, the Gazelles held firm to secure their first win of the camp.

Jane Asinde was once again the standout performer, registering a double-double with 26 points and 18 rebounds.

She received support from Mellisa Akullo (13 points) and Hope Akello (11 points), as Uganda finally found rhythm in their third and final friendly.

With the Cairo leg of preparations now complete, the Gazelles will head to Alexandria for a residential camp until July 24.

The trio of Claire Lamunu, Paige Robinson, and Mya Wasswa; yet to join the team, are expected to link up in Alexandria.

Uganda will be making their fourth appearance at the continental tournament, having previously featured in 1997, 2015, and most recently in 2023, when they finished a commendable 7th.
