Uganda’s next generation of track and field stars delivered a powerful statement in Abeokuta, Nigeria, wrapping up the 4th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Championships with a nine-medal haul.
From July 16 to 20, Team Uganda collected four gold, one silver, and four bronze medals, continuing the country’s growing reputation as a long-distance powerhouse and showcasing the promise of its young talent.
The gold rush was led by Samuel Simba Cherop, who dominated the U20 men’s 10,000m. Bentalin Yeko took top honours in the U20 women’s 3000m, while Charity Cherop raced to gold in the U20 women’s 5000m.
Team captain Nancy Chepkwurui also delivered, winning the U20 women’s 1500m.
There was silver success for Risper Cherop in the 5000m, while the bronze medals came from across the board. Brenda Chekwemoi claimed third in the 1500m, and Samuel Simba Cherop added another medal to his name with bronze in the 5000m.
Jacob Sande earned bronze in the U20 men’s 1500m, and David Berkham Otim impressed in the field with bronze in the U18 men’s long jump.
