Super Falcons Soar to WAFCON Final, Avenge 2022 Loss to South Africa

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their spot in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, defeating arch-rivals South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final on Tuesday evening.

This victory keeps their hopes of a record-extending 10th continental title alive and avenges their 2022 loss to Banyana Banyana.

Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie were the heroes for Nigeria. Ajibade broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before halftime, capitalizing on a handball by South Africa’s Bambanani Mbane. This goal capped a dominant first-half performance by Nigeria.

Defending champions South Africa fought back, with Linda Motlhalo leveling the scores in the 60th minute from a penalty after Hildah Magaia was fouled.

However, as extra time loomed, Michelle Alozie unleashed a sensational 35-yard strike deep into stoppage time, swerving past goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to seal the win for Nigeria.

Despite a tense final few minutes marked by injuries and yellow cards, Nigeria held firm. The Super Falcons remain unbeaten in the tournament and head into the final with strong confidence. South Africa will now compete for third place.
