CHAN 2024 Pre-Tournament: Byekwaso Sees Growth Despite Cranes’ Defeat to Tanzania

By Daniel Muwonge

Uganda Cranes CHAN co-coach Morley Byekwaso has called for calm after his side lost 1–0 to Tanzania in their opening game of the CECAFA 3 Nations Tournament.

Despite the result, Byekwaso highlighted the match as a valuable learning moment on the road to CHAN 2024.

“The first half wasn’t good. We allowed their defenders to push up and it gave us problems,” he admitted, pointing to Uganda’s early struggles that led to Idd Nado’s 14th-minute goal for the hosts.

But he was quick to applaud the turnaround after halftime.

“We changed in the second half. We didn’t allow them to play and the game shifted in our favour,” he said. “We created chances but didn’t take them, and that’s something we’ll work on.”

Byekwaso remains upbeat about the team’s development.

“The way the boys pressed in different phases shows we are improving. If we concentrate more on finishing our chances, I think we’ll be a better team in the tournament.”

Uganda’s next test comes against Senegal, with the technical team using this mini-tournament to fine-tune selections and tactics for CHAN.
