Halima Nakaayi and Shida Leni delivered statement performances at Mandela National Stadium as the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) brought the curtain down on the 2025 track and field season with a thrilling finale at the National Championships.

Nakaayi, known globally for her 800m brilliance, stepped up to the 1500m and didn’t disappoint. The world indoor bronze medalist stormed to victory, defending her national title with confidence and ease.

Her signature late kick and tactical control silenced any doubts about her range, especially against a younger, hungry field of challengers.

The win came just days after her third-place finish in the 800m at the London Diamond League on July 19. That race, stacked with world-class competition, was another strong sign that Nakaayi is hitting top form at the perfect time ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

It will be her fifth worlds appearance, a journey that began with her historic gold medal in Doha in 2019.

Not to be outdone, Shida Leni dazzled in the 400m, cruising to victory and reinforcing her status as Uganda’s undisputed sprint queen. Her smooth stride and control from start to finish had the crowd on its feet.

The two-day championships brought together over 200 athletes from across the country, battling in events ranging from the short sprints to long-distance races, as well as field events like jumps and throws. For many, this was a last shot at hitting qualifying marks for upcoming international competitions.

Now, with the local season officially wrapped, all eyes turn to the global stage. Uganda’s top athletes will head to Tokyo and beyond carrying the country’s hopes, chasing medals and glory in what promises to be a high-stakes close to the year.
