Uganda’s track talent continues to shine on the continental stage, with Chelimo Karen delivering the country’s first athletics medal at the 2025 ANOCA School Games in Algeria.
Competing in the youth women’s 3000 metres final under the floodlights at Annaba’s May 19th 1956 Stadium, Chelimo stormed to a silver medal with a time of 9:33.69.
It was a commanding run that saw her hold her own in a stacked field, offering Uganda a strong foothold in the athletics competition.
The night also saw spirited efforts from Uganda’s sprinters. Atuyambe Rashad clocked in a sixth-place finish in the 400 metres, battling through a fast field. In the 100 metres dash, Abraham Muhwezi also came in sixth, showing early pace but getting nudged out in a tight finish.
While the sprints didn’t yield medals, the overall performances underlined Uganda’s steady growth in track events, particularly at youth level.
With more middle and long-distance races still to come — areas where Uganda traditionally thrives — the medal tally is expected to rise.
