Makerere University has officially launched the kit for the 2025 Makerere University Run, set for August 17, under the theme “Run the Hills for the Future.”
Now in its fifth edition, the run is expected to attract over 5,000 participants, including alumni, elite athletes, students, and corporate teams.
Runners will take on the challenging terrain of Uganda’s oldest university not just for fitness, but to support a larger mission—ensuring financially struggling students can complete their education.
All proceeds from the run will go toward strengthening a sustainable fund for Economically Disadvantaged Students. This initiative aims to keep students enrolled without disruptions due to tuition or material costs.
Among those directly impacted by this initiative is Kule Festus, a student with a disability, who highlighted the critical role last year’s funds played in supporting accessibility needs.
“The money collected last year helped us get computers and reading devices, but we still need more assistive tools,” said Kule. “Makerere is hilly, and many students struggle with manual wheelchairs that easily break.”
He hopes this year’s donations will equip the Disability Support Unit with better mobility aids and wheelchairs, helping level the academic environment for all.
