Walukuba Barbarians coach Leonard Kulubambula and player Duncan Kirya were among five people injured in a serious accident on the Kampala–Gulu highway early Monday morning while returning from the Gulu Rugby 7s tournament.
Police in Wobulenzi reported that the black Toyota Harrier, registration number UBF 046B, which was being driven by coach Leonard, lost control at a corner in Kkungu, Luweero District, around 4 AM before overturning.
All the occupants occupants sustained injuries. Others hurt were Elijah Akena, Tonny Blair Otto, and Jude Bakanyanga.
The victims were first admitted to Njovu Hospital in Wobulenzi before being referred to Mulago National Hospital for further treatment.
The team was returning from the second circuit of the Nile Special National Rugby 7s Series, held in Gulu over the weekend.
Walukuba Barbarians, current leaders of the series with 41 points after two rounds, had their unbeaten run ended in the men’s final by Buffaloes RFC, who won 5-0 courtesy of a Fat Moses unconverted try.
The Barbarians had opened the season in dominant fashion, successfully defending their Kabaka Coronation 7s crown with a 19-5 victory over Heathens in the final at Kyadondo Rugby Club on August 3.
Their strong start and top spot in the standings have made them early title favourites in the 2025 series, which will resume with the Rujumba Sevens at Kings Park Arena on August 23-24.
