Real Madrid have strongly rejected a proposal to play an upcoming La Liga match between Villarreal and Barcelona in the United States, calling it an “unacceptable precedent.”
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) approved the plan to move the December 21 match to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium and is now seeking permission from FIFA and UEFA.
In a statement, Real Madrid argued that playing a home game abroad “alters the competitive balance” and “sets an unacceptable precedent” that could have serious consequences for the future of football.
The Spanish football supporters’ association (FASFE) and fan groups from both Barcelona and Villarreal have also voiced opposition.
Villarreal president Fernando Roig, however, defended the move, stating it’s an opportunity to “expand the brand of our football and of Villarreal CF” and to “generate more revenue.”
Real Madrid has formally asked FIFA not to authorize the match without the consent of all La Liga clubs.
