Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has signed a new four-year contract, securing his future with the club until 2029.
The 27-year-old Argentina international, who was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid over the summer, initially joined Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021. He has since made 126 appearances and scored eight goals.
As captain, Romero led the team to a Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy.
The deal was signed after he was named club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank.
In a related development, fellow defender Djed Spence has also penned a new long-term deal. Spence, 25, who had a difficult start to his Spurs career with multiple loan spells, emerged as a key player last season under Ange Postecoglou, making 42 appearances and scoring twice.
