In a thrilling day for Major League Soccer, two of Europe’s biggest stars, Son Heung-min and Thomas Muller, have both scored their first goals for their new clubs.
Former Tottenham captain Son, 33, netted a stunning free-kick just six minutes into his second start for Los Angeles FC in a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas.
The goal was his first in his third appearance since joining the club from the Premier League for a record MLS fee in excess of £20m.
Despite the personal milestone, Son expressed disappointment with the final result, stating, “I’m glad I scored [my] first goal [in] the MLS and also for LAFC. But for me, the most important thing is to get three points. I’m really, really disappointed for that.”
Meanwhile, German veteran Muller, 35, clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory for Vancouver Whitecaps against St Louis City, converting a penalty in the 14th minute of stoppage-time.
Muller, who ended a 25-year career with Bayern Munich this summer, was captaining his new side in his first start.
“That I was able to score the final goal in front of our crowd here, it was an amazing feeling, amazing,” he said.
