Otucet Calls for Special Recognition of Uganda Team Ahead of Tokyo 2025

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President Dominic Otucet has called on government to grant special recognition to athletes representing the country at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The global event runs from September 13, and Uganda has already secured more than 20 qualified athletes who are in camp preparing for the competition. Otucet noted that athletics remains Uganda’s most successful sport internationally, with more gold medals won in track and field than in any other discipline.

“Athletics is the only sport that has marketed Uganda on the global stage, so it deserves special recognition from His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the government,” Otucet said. “Team Uganda will once again carry the national flag high in Tokyo, and they need all the support and motivation.”

This year’s qualification process was tougher than in past editions, making Uganda’s achievement of surpassing 20 qualified athletes even more significant. The team will travel to Japan in batches beginning September 9, with return trips spread through September 23, as they aim to add to Uganda’s strong athletics record.
