Thunderbirds, Avengers tied as Buffaloes go Top of Overall 7s Series Standings

The 2025 Nile Special Uganda Rugby 7s Series has had three different Cup Final winners in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Thunderbirds & Walukuba Barbarians won the Kabaka Coronation 7s before Avengers & Toyota Buffaloes upset them in the Gulu 7s. At the Plascon Entebbe 7s this past Sunday, Platinum Credit Heathens & Nile Rapids joined the conversation too.

This has resulted in there being no clear leader of the series at the midway point.

For the women, although none of the teams has changed its position on the standings, the series has evolved into a two-way battle between Thunderbirds and Avengers. They are tied on fifty-eight points, a healthy nine ahead of Walukuba Titans.

It is also too close to call at the bottom of the table. Nile Rapids’ haul in Entebbe brings them within five points of Black Pearls in the battle for survival.

Women Series Standings
1 Thunderbirds 58
2 Avengers 58
3 Walukuba Titans 49
4 She Wolves 43
5 Black Pearls 37
6 Nile Rapids 32
*The highest-ranked team wins the overall series, and the lowest-ranked gets relegated.

For the men, the Buffaloes have leapfrogged Walukuba into the driving seat, but by just two points. They are the only two teams to reach the semifinals at all three stops.

But Buffaloes and Walukuba are not alone in the title race as defending champions Heathens collected maximum points in Kawuku.

The battle for survival sees Gulu City Falcons being the only team yet to get into double figures as Hippos find some breathing room ahead of Elgon Wolves.

Men Series Standings
1 Buffaloes 58
2 Walukuba Barbarians 56
3 Heathens 49
4 Rhinos 44
5 KOBs 40
6 Mongers 37
7 Pirates 36
8 Rams 28
9 Eagles 26
10 Hippos 20
11 Elgon Wolves 15
12 Gulu City Falcons 7
*The highest-ranked team wins the overall series, and the two lowest-ranked teams get relegated.
