Busoga College Mwiri Clinch 20th Schools Cricket Title with Unbeaten Run

Busoga College Mwiri secured their place in Ugandan schools cricket history after defeating St. John’s High School, Kauga by 25 runs to claim the UCA-Sky View Boys’ Schools Cricket Week 2025 trophy at Nyakasura.

The win not only delivered their 20th national title but also capped off an unbeaten run through the tournament.

Mwiri were asked to bat first after St. John’s won the toss, and despite losing early wickets, skipper Gerald Olipa anchored the innings with 34 off 30 balls.

He was supported by Daniel Muhumuza (20) and Doka Abdulshakur (22), helping their side post 116 for 9 in 19.5 overs. St. John’s bowler Jackson Asiku impressed with 4 wickets but Mwiri’s depth ensured they crossed the 100-run mark, crucial in a final.

Chasing 117, St. John’s never found momentum. Opener Asiku fell early, and when captain Robert Owili was dismissed for 21, Mwiri’s bowlers took control. Ali Balidawa resisted with an unbeaten 27, but the innings closed at 91 for 6. Joel Okoth (2 for 13) and Ryan Agaba (3 for 25) led Mwiri’s disciplined bowling effort.

The result sealed Mwiri’s 20th championship title, reinforcing their dominance in the competition. For St. John’s, there was consolation in individual accolades, with Asiku named Player of the Series for his all-round contribution across the week.

Individual awards also highlighted the tournament’s top performers: Olipa finished as the best batter with 298 runs, Ntare’s Paul Asasira was best bowler with 18 wickets, Shub Nayee of Shree Sahajand School took best fielder, and Owili claimed best wicketkeeper with 12 dismissals.

Mwiri’s unbeaten march and historic 20th crown underlined their continued status as the most successful school in Ugandan cricket, a legacy that remains unmatched.
